Project: A purely visual photo essay for Heavy Feral capturing a moment of serene intimacy between two men.

 

Concept & Development

This project was an exercise in minimalist storytelling. Specifically featuring Chad Payne and Marc Terblanche, the series is entirely wordless, thus allowing the images to speak for themselves. "Blue on Blue" considers the deliberate use of deep blue in the context of touch and togetherness, a key aspect of blue body painting photography. The artwork began as an experiment: I asked Chad and Marc to paint each other entirely blue on a beach. Initially, they had never met before that day. At first, they were hesitant, but as the paint spread, so too did their openness to their shared vulnerability. The result is playful, yet it also deeply reflects intimacy encouraged by shared touch and trust.

In nature, blue is rare—created by light rather than pigment. Consequently, blue carries weight, but also fluidity. It is neither masculine nor feminine, neither joy nor sorrow. Therefore, to paint the body blue is to align it with the vastness of the sky and the depth of the ocean, thereby evoking something that is simultaneously physical and universal.
